Wiley the Wolf and Violet! From Arctic wolves to Tundra wolves to Iberian wolves and more, wolves are fast and smart and extremely social. Here are some top 10 wolf facts for kids.

  1. 1. Did you know that wolves howl to communicate with each other? They can communicate warnings about predators and give information about a wolf’s location and the location of prey.

2. Even though wolves and dogs share a common ancestor and many characteristics, they are classified as different animals because of different evolutionary paths. Wolves are known as canis lupus.

4. Wolves live and hunt in packs of 6-10 animals. They roam large distances, often 12 miles in a single day, and hunt within a territory of 50 square miles to 1,000 square miles.

5. Wolves prey on deer, elk, bison, mountain goats and moose. Wolves also eat rabbits, beavers, birds, fish, lizards, snakes, and fruit. A single wolf can eat 20 pounds of meat in 1 sitting! Wolves can go for more than a week without eating.

6. Wolf packs are established according to a hierarchy, with a dominant male at the top. The wolf pack structure changes over time, sometimes seasonally.

10. Wolves travel at an average speed of 5 miles per hour when traveling for long distances and can sprint 36-38 miles per hour for shorter distances.
